Heart-touching poem

310029 Maker: Elise Eder. Double sheet of letter paper (so-called post paper) with a hand-painted frame of small branches, dashes and dots on the 4 pages. At the top of the first page is a small handpainted adornment (burning torch, quiver and arrow...) Together with the accordingly illustrated envelope (wax-sealed). Design: Elise Eder. Watercolor and ink. 188x155 (letter), 83x100 mm (envelope). c1810.

The adornments taken apart, our letter is remarkable by the involved persons: sender is a daughter of Joseph Eder (owner of the art gallery „At the black elephant“), and the letter is addressed to her brother-in-law, „Monsieur Jeremie de Beermann“, ie to Jeremias Bermann (1770-1855) who was himself a son-in-law of Joseph Eder (1759-1835), and took over the art gallery in 1815 (he had been a partner since 1811). Grounds for the letter which contains a long, heart-touching poem is St. Andrew’s day on November 30. That day marks the end of the liturgical year and was therefore, in former times, as meaningful as New Year’s Eve today.

The letter twice folded, the flap of the envelope slightly damaged by opening, otherwise very good conservation.
