French album with devotional pictures
310461 Album Religieux. 24 thick cardboard pages with 48 freely inserted devotional images, mostly for First Communion. Cathedral style binding with relief decoration, the front cover with antique portal, title in silver and „romantic“ decorative elements, covered in dark blue and black cloth. Gilt edges, metal clasp. 182x142 mm. Circa 1887.
The pages are decorated with a figurative blind-stamped frame (cross, pontifical insignia, monstrance) that surrounds a dark blue paper background on which the images are placed. These come from well-known publishers of the rue Saint-Sulpice (Aubry, Baillard, Bouasse-Lebel, Bouasse jeune, Boumard & Fils, Dopter, Letaille, Morel et Pannier), they are made in steel engraving or chromolithography, generally with a lot of gold. Many have a mechanical lace frame, some have silk applications. 4 are in gelatin with a painted decoration, 2 of which also have applications. Some have pencil dedications on the back, we noted an address to Charlotte for her first communion in 1885. The most recent date is 1887. French description on request.
Corners very slightly rubbed, otherwise in remarkably fresh condition, including the intact images inside.
